The Variant Conspiracy

Our Review of In Irina’s Cards by Christine Hart, 209 Pages

One of the things I enjoyed about this book was that even though Irina was a young adult (college age), and finding her place – the author didn’t write her as flighty or wishy washy.  There was a lot Irina didn’t understand about her recent visions after buying a deck of Tarot cards.  So there was some uncertainty, but she took steps to unlock what was happening around her and within herself.

There’s a real juxtaposition of the realistic Canadian setting and the variants, genetic science and supernatural elements of this story. Each person she meets, she has to determine if they are friend or foe and how each fit into the big puzzle.

I enjoyed this book a great deal. There is a good balance of adventure, discovery and her making friends, and navigating relationships.  Are all the questions that were asked, answered by the end of this book?  No. Some readers have strong opinions about whether each book should have resolution, even if they are part of a series. You probably know where you fall on this spectrum. If you like science fiction, or have dreamed of having a super power, I think you will enjoy this series.

Wendy Slate

I got to the library minutes before nine thirty, Archer walking a few feet behind me.

“You don’t have to act like my vampire bodyguard,” I murmured as I caught a small group looking at him with scared gazes, knowing he could hear me.

“Of course I do. I’m a vampire and your bodyguard.”

Rolling my eyes, I paused, letting him catch up to me before wrapping my arm around his. “It wouldn’t hurt to smile. Next thing I know, someone is going to report you to campus security and have you kicked out. Then you won’t be much of a bodyguard, will you?”

This time he rolled his eyes, but he did relax his facial features.

Together we walked up the steps. My group was meeting in a study room on the third floor. When we arrived at the room, only Jason was there. Opening the door alerted him of our arrival and he looked up with a smile.

Wait a second. For a split second, it looked like he was glaring at Archer. His expression changed so fast I wasn’t too sure I saw right, even with my keener eyesight since becoming a vampire.

“Who’s this? New boyfriend already?” he asked, a smile on his lips.

Brushing away my suspicions, I shook my head. “He’s a friend. He goes to school here too. Engineering major. Fifth year.”

I was quite impressed with myself having come up with a lie on my toes. I was going to introduce Archer as a friend anyway, but Jason question kind of caught me off guard.

Jason nodded, accepting my words. “The other two said it will be a while before they get here. They wanted to stop by their dorm first,” he spared another glance at Archer. “Will he be staying?”

In response to that, Archer plopped himself into a chair in the corner of the room. “You won’t even know I’m here,” he said before taking out his cell phone.

I had a feeling that wouldn’t be the truth if he planned on continuing watching his wrestling show. Ignoring him, I sat at the table across from Jason.

“I started developing some samples for the project,” I stated as I took my notebook and laptop from my backpack.

I started to go over what I had so far with him briefly as well as sharing our other ideas. Though, honestly, I was ready to leave before I even got here. I still had yet to convince Archer to take me to where Theo had brought me. And by not convince, I meant not even approach to the subject. As soon as the thought crossed my mind, I was guarding my thoughts so Archer would be none the wiser.

Our Review by Felita Daniels / 332 Pages

This book packs so much into it, there’s something for everyone.  Some of the elements included: science, adventure, mystery, suspense, time travel, art, reincarnation, Steampunk, romance and history. This is the author’s first published novel and it is impressive.  The early chapters are captivating.

The middle may have suffered from including just one or two past lives too many.  I had accepted the premise of what Bryan as going through and learning or absorbing. So more examples slowed down the action of what happens now, in the present, to these two characters, Bryan and Linz.  The pace of the ending or wrap-up seemed rushed. It does have a lead in for a sequel.  Some readers may feel they were left hanging a little.  There are lots of novels that are structured this way in today’s book market, you probably already know your preference for closure or if you like being ‘teased’.

Overall, a very interesting of blending of romance and time travel with a bit of science on the side.

EXCERPT

Brendan smiles and shrugs. “I hit him. He trying to put your beautiful face in the cake.”
Relief flooding me that it was innocent, I laugh at Benji and he pokes his tongue out at me, a small smile gracing his face. My heart lightens further at his playfulness. I’ve missed it. Things are still pretty tense between us, nearly nine months after our blowout over Brendan. I can see where Benji and my friends are coming from but I can’t face the drama that I know will ensue if I break up with Brendan. Since I haven’t told anyone about my fears, Benji and Joel feel it’s okay to constantly voice their objections to my relationship with him. They normally finish their rants with nasty descriptions of my intelligence. It’s not fun.
“F#&%, I reckon it must be time for presents.” I hear a very familiar voice shout. My heart skips a beat, and my body practically melting, everything that’s wrong in my life fading into insignificance. I search the gaudily decorated, crowded hall for where his voice is coming from, grinning widely when I spot him.
Mik is standing on a chair near the front door with a big smile on his face. His radio silence during the last week had led me to believe that he wasn’t coming tonight, dampening my enthusiasm for the party.
Since Mik was voted as Sergeant at Arms for the MC nearly a year ago, he hasn’t been able to commit to anything because he never knows when he might be needed by the Club. What could possibly keep that bunch of men so busy has me stumped. Mik won’t tell me what he is up to whenever I ask and I stopped asking Dad years ago. I don’t think the Black Shamrocks are outlaws by definition, but I’m pretty sure they flirt with the thin blue line at times.
“Mik!” I shriek. “You came.”
I’m running towards him before he has time to jump down from the chair. Brendan grabs my arm, but I shrug him off, dodging the crowd who’ve turned to see who interrupted the speeches. Benji’s behind me trying to get his present from Mik first so I pick up my pace. Benji might be the football star but he’ll never be able to run as fast as me.
Once I’m close enough, I launch myself into Mik’s arms.
He catches me—just like I knew he would—because I’ve been launching myself at him like that since I was five years old. I wrap my legs around his waist and my arms around his neck and kiss his smooth cheeks. He holds my weight easily, with his arms folded under my ass, as he plants a quick kiss on my lips.
“Hey, Angel. Happy to see me?” he chuckles, his hazel eyes flashing at me.
I love how his eyes light up when he sees me. He gets a twinkle in them that I’m certain only I create. The feeling’s mutual; the only time I feel as if I’m as whole as I can be is when he’s around. He makes me feel as if the hole in my chest that’s been there since my mom died isn’t as big or as painful anymore. “Of course I am, you big idiot. I thought you weren’t coming.”

Romance in Your Mystery?

Guest Post by Author Julie Anne Lindsey

If You Don’t Like Romance in Your Mysteries, My Books Aren’t for You.

Julie Anne Lindsey PhotoThere. I said it. I can’t help myself. I think romance has a place in cozy mystery. Most cozies have a romantic thread somewhere, but it’s often understated and nearly invisible. Some reviewers, I’ve noticed, don’t like romance soiling their mysteries. So, I should probably give everyone a heads-up. I like romance in cozies. Mostly, I like real, and romance is real. Why not add it generously to cozies? I mean, romance is something every reader can relate to. It’s one of the amazing and torturous perils of being single. If writers are hoping to find common ground with readers while writing about what they know, adding romance seems like a great way to reach two goals. Right? Plus, if I’m being honest, I love it. I love reading those toe curling will she / won’t she scenes and I adore writing them. So, I do.
