KING PESO is the fourth book in the sensational Detective Emilia Cruz mystery series recently optioned for both television and film. Emilia is the first female police detective in Acapulco, where Mexican drug cartels battle for control and politicians are bought with blood money.
Three cops are murdered, execution style. Emilia worked with them all.
Her partner’s wife is killed in a home invasion. Was he the real target?
Is Emilia the next?
She hopes to be assigned to a task force to investigate the killings, but is instead directed to a new police unit championed by Acapulco’s ambitious mayor and overseen by a shady union strongman. But when Emilia stumbles upon a falsified report, she will conduct a private investigation, even as another murder victim carries a stark message for her.
Home is no refuge for Emilia; hotel manager Kurt Rucker has a shocking secret that could tear their relationship apart.
Unexpected help comes from a frightened attorney and a famous movie star, but each new clue to the murders unravels the one before. Meanwhile, Emilia’s ongoing hunt for a missing girl, a continuing series subplot, leads to the infamous El Pharaoh casino, a place she knows only too well.
What do a casino and a cop killer have in common? Emilia bets on her partner, but his gamble could cost both their lives.

With evidence pointing to a gang-related drive-by, Madison and her team investigate the town’s seedy underbelly in search of justice for their fallen brother. But the deeper they dig, the more convoluted the case becomes. Now they need to figure out if this was a random shooting as part of a gang initiation, a straight-up hate crime, or a targeted kill. But with the Stiles PD under attack, they have to do it fast…before more people pay with their lives.

What if the lives you remembered could lead you to your one true love?
What if you learned that, for thousands of years, a deadly enemy had conspired to keep the two of you apart?
Bryan Pierce is an internationally famous artist, whose paintings have dazzled the world. But there’s a secret to Bryan’s success: Every canvas is inspired by an unusually vivid dream. Bryan believes these dreams are really recollections?possibly even flashback from another life?and he has always hoped that his art will lead him to an answer. And when he meets Linz Jacobs, a neurogenticist who recognizes a recurring childhood nightmare in one Bryan’s paintings, he is convinced she holds the key.
Their meeting triggers Bryan’s most powerful dream yet? Visions of a team of scientists who, on the verge of discovering a cure for Alzheimer’s, died in a lab explosion decades ago. As his visions intensify, Bryan and Linz start to discern a pattern. But a deadly enemy watches their every move, and he will stop at nothing to ensure that the past stays buried.
“hang on for a wild and entertaining ride around the world and through the centuries back to ancient Egypt” Library Journal (starred review)
“Gwendolyn Womack’s tale dazzles.” US Weekly (Standout Spring Novels)
“A sweeping, mesmerizing feat of absolute magic…” M. J. Rose, New York Times bestselling author of The Witch of Painted Sorrows
“The guy-meets-girl story as you’ve never heard it before…A mind-explosion of a journey ensues that involves time travel, mystery, love, and a whole lot of plot twists.” Refinery29
“A page turner that will keep readers up late into the night. Readers who love adventure, romance and fantasy will love this book” The Vancouver Sun
Gwendolyn Womack began writing plays in college and majored in Theatre at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. She received an MFA in Directing Theatre and Film from California Institute of the Arts and currently lives in Los Angeles with her family. The Memory Painter is her first novel.
This book packs so much into it, there’s something for everyone. Some of the elements included: science, adventure, mystery, suspense, time travel, art, reincarnation, Steampunk, romance and history. This is the author’s first published novel and it is impressive. The early chapters are captivating.
The middle may have suffered from including just one or two past lives too many. I had accepted the premise of what Bryan as going through and learning or absorbing. So more examples slowed down the action of what happens now, in the present, to these two characters, Bryan and Linz. The pace of the ending or wrap-up seemed rushed. It does have a lead in for a sequel. Some readers may feel they were left hanging a little. There are lots of novels that are structured this way in today’s book market, you probably already know your preference for closure or if you like being ‘teased’.
Overall, a very interesting of blending of romance and time travel with a bit of science on the side.
San Francisco astrologer Julia Bonatti’s life is turned upside down when she becomes the target of the city’s newest cult leader, Reverend Roy of the Prophet’s Tabernacle. Driven out of her apartment in the midst of a disastrous Mercury retrograde period, she takes shelter with a client who’s caring for two elderly aunts. One aunt appears stricken with dementia and the other has fallen under the spell of the Reverend Roy. To add to the confusion, a young man claiming to be a long lost nephew arrives. The longer he stays, the more dangerous things become. Is the young man truly a member of the family? Can astrology confirm that? Julia’s not sure, but one thing she does know is that Mercury wasn’t merely the messenger of the gods—he was a trickster and a liar as well.

This is the first in a new series that features an astrologer Julia Bonatti. The first thing I would like to share with readers is that it is a great read. The second thing I’d like to discuss is reader expectations. The cover is beautiful, really. However, I feel it could lead some to believe this is a cozy style mystery. It is actually categorized on Amazon as a Mystery/Thriller/Suspense.
You may wonder why that could make any difference in a reader’s enjoyment. In this book you are literally at the 50 percent mark before Julia starts ‘detecting’ anything. So cozy readers that are used to the main character asking about motives or a person’s alibi early on, may think this book has a really slow start. Cozies in general tend to have a wonderful little town with lovely people and one dastardly, bad guy. In the Madness of Mercury, it is a much larger town and there are multiple threats to Julia and her friends. There are some serious themes about how the elderly are treated, how politicians may not be honoring their citizens, a religious figure may not have love in their heart, and a few other heavier themes not usually found in cozies.
I don’t like to give anything away about mystery novels, I did have a beef with the character not calling the police after a particular incident. In general, I felt the interlocking pieces and relationships worked well. There was plenty of action as plots and plans collided into a satisfying ending.

In the late spring of 1991, a flood and fire of historic proportions tore through the pretty resort town of Obergrande, New York, in the central region of the Adirondack mountains.
The twin disasters destroyed a large part of the east side of the town that bordered the Hudson River and Lake Obergrande.
In the aftermath, a new dam was built, and that damaged part of the town “drowned,” covered by the new, larger lake.
During that terrible flood, five kindergarten girls were trapped in their drowning school, huddled together as the water rose higher, rescued just in the nick of time. The nightmare bonded them, and three others like them, to each other for life.
These are their stories.

If You Don’t Like Romance in Your Mysteries, My Books Aren’t for You.
There. I said it. I can’t help myself. I think romance has a place in cozy mystery. Most cozies have a romantic thread somewhere, but it’s often understated and nearly invisible. Some reviewers, I’ve noticed, don’t like romance soiling their mysteries. So, I should probably give everyone a heads-up. I like romance in cozies. Mostly, I like real, and romance is real. Why not add it generously to cozies? I mean, romance is something every reader can relate to. It’s one of the amazing and torturous perils of being single. If writers are hoping to find common ground with readers while writing about what they know, adding romance seems like a great way to reach two goals. Right? Plus, if I’m being honest, I love it. I love reading those toe curling will she / won’t she scenes and I adore writing them. So, I do.
