Meet Tessendra ‘Tess’ Rockwood

Age: 16

Hair: Black (dyed)

Eyes: Blue

Favorite food: Mushroom risotto

Favorite possession: Mack (a hunting knife)

Following her mother’s murder, Tess fled her safe and easy life in the domed city of Eden to spend an aimless year in the rough ‘n’ ready Badlands. Here she changed her name, taught herself the local dialect Malspeak, and learned to hunt, protect herself and survive on her own.

Tess is independent to a fault, sarcastic, and brave. One reviewer compared her to Jack Bauer, while another felt strongly that even though she’s hella tough, she’s relatable. She isn’t afraid to throw herself into the fray, and once she works out who, exactly, she loves, she’ll die to protect them. She’s definitely flawed, but hey: aren’t we all?

In creating the character of Tess, I drew on the most headstrong and funny parts of my personality, as well as classic YA heroines like The Hunger Games’ Katniss and Graceling’s Katsa.

Dream Cast: Chloe Grace Moretz

Ah, Chloe, how I love thee. Let me count the ways! How about her hilarious turn as Alec Baldwin’s duplicitous niece, Kaylie Hooper, in the LOL-inducing 30 Rock? Or her understated take on Abby, the spookily shy vampire girl in Let Me In? But of course, the reason why we know she’d be perfect for Tess was the uninhibited badassery of Hit Girl, the pint-sized, foul-mouthed assassin in Kickass. Girl’s got sass and style for days. I’d love to see Ms Moretz take on the Trust, don’t you agree?
